Message from The New President – Jon Burpee
This is the start of the 12th
year of the Roseburg Sister Cities Program and I am honored to be your
new president. Much is planned for our group this year. The major
upcoming event is the June visit by
the Shobu Delegation. Our Japanese friends will arrive June 23,
staying until June 27. One of the best ways to become involved in the
Sister Cities program is to host one of the delegates, as it will be an
enriching experience hard to describe. I also encourage you to attend
the “Welcome Dinner” on June 24 and the “Good-bye Picnic” on June 26,
whether or not you host a delegate, as these two events and others
happening while they are visiting, will provide outstanding cultural
experiences. You may also wish to consider traveling to Japan this fall
- a once in a life-time experience!

First Citizens Dinner & Annual Dinner in November
We started Jan. ‘05 right
off with 11 members having a table, with Japanese decorations, at
Roseburg’s annual 1st
Citizens Dinner. Attending this event is an excellent way to
promote
our program in the community, especially this year when the two
honoree’s were Sister
Cities’ own members: Jean Burpee
& Brian Pargeter!. Thank you to Marliene Winfield
&
Thelma Sayers for organizing Sister Cities participation in this
premier event.
Others Thank
You’s go to the following people, who helped make the Nov. Annual Dinner a success: Martha
Scott, (whose residency at Linus Oakes makes the private dinning
possible,) Nancy
Andrich, Marliene Winfield, Jeannie Burpee, Barbara Iwata, Lynnette
Roberts and Larry
Shipley. Dinner guest
enjoyed wine from Abacela Winery and were treated to heartfelt reports of a
fabulous trip to Shobu this past Oct. by the very enthusiastic returning delegates! Beautiful gifts from the
city of Shobu were on display (see article in this newsletter)
and an outstanding bridal gown and other Japanese treasures donated by Lois Eagleton.

Hinamatsuri
Dolls from Shobu
On the October
visit, the City of Shobu presented Roseburg delegates with a gift of an
out-standing set of hand-made Hinamatsuri
Dolls. The Hinamatsuri, Girl’s Festival or Doll’s
Festival, is held on March 3 to wish that girls grow “healthy &
beautiful.” Originating in the 17th century, when daughters
of noble families played with small paper dolls, often they are now
handed own in families for generations. Grandparents present dolls to
granddaughters at her first Doll’s Festival. Some come in 2-doll
sets of the Emperor & Empress, some in sets of 15 of dolls wearing
traditional court dress, and other are smaller varying sets. It
was believed that dolls were a protection from illness or bad
fortune. Displayed on red clothed shelves, it is customary to
celebrate with special food.

Traveling To Japan: Applications are now also
being taken for those wishing to travel to Japan on the
annual visit (approx. 10 days, usually in Oct.) The
experience simply cannot be described! It is well
beyond the average “tourist” trip. Typically 4+ days
are spent staying with hosts in Shobu & visiting local
sights, followed by a 3-4 day bus tour, (guided/hosted
by Shobu friends) to varying places in Japan – hotels,
meals, etc. included.
