Message from The President –  by HD Honscheid

I want to express our gratitude to the outgoing President Jon Burpee for his wonderful job of leading the organization through the year of 2005. Jon did a fabulous job. Please make sure to thank Jon in person next time you see him.

I am delighted and honored to be the new President of the Roseburg Sister Cities Association for the year 2006.  We have an exiting year ahead of us, and I would like to share three goals of mine with you.

Firstly, I want to do all I can to make the June visit of our friends from Japan a memorable success. This year it looks like the delegation from Shobu will arrive on June 15th and will stay through June 22 (dates are not confirmed yet). This time the delegation will stay longer than in the past few years, so we are thinking of arranging a bus trip to Southern Oregon and to the Redwoods in Northern California with them.

Secondly, I would like to complete the update and expansion of our membership data base. We need to have email addresses for as many members and interested non-members as possible so that we can use mass emails effectively. We also should continue to review the member base to make sure the information is current.

Thirdly, I feel we should again create some type of Fund Raiser / Outreach Program Activity during the coming year. It is important that we continue to let the community know what we are all about, namely promoting "Friendship and Understanding" between the cities of Shobu, Japan and Roseburg.

I hope you will support me in trying to reach these goals.  If you have the time and the talent to help, please volunteer. Any help by the members is always very much appreciated. ~ H.D.

<>ENJOY A LIFETIME MEMORY
by being a Host Family when the Shobu Delegation visits Roseburg this June 2006!

I’m getting ready to send out Hosting applications soon, so we can have families available to assign to our Delegates, once we know who and how many are coming in June. I would be happy to discuss the Hosting responsibilities and rewards with you - just give me a call!

This year the Delegation will be spending their entire trip in Oregon June 15-22, and we will be providing an Oregon Tour for them during part of their visit. We expect that the hosting will be for 3 to 4 nights and may include a weeknight.

I can guarantee you’ll find hosting an enjoyable & lasting memory!  Many times it’s the start of lasting friendships, as you open your home to our friends in Japan.

For more details or an application, please contact Janet Johnston at 430-2885.

Journeys, 2005 Shobu Delegation

the 2005 delegation to Shobu, Japan

On October 18, 2005, 17 Roseburg delegates rendezvoused at PDX for an afternoon takeoff. Many of us had spent the night at the airport Hampton Inn and had dinner together at the Rheinlander Restaurant. We had an uneventful but long plane ride to Narita Airport, where we were greeted by some of our hosts and Jeannie Burpee, who had been helping as Grammy to new arrival Aya. The group traveled by "Hato-bus" (the driver's name is Mr. Hato) to Kenkatsu Conference Center, where we ate dinner, bathed, and bedded down for the night.

Refreshed the next morning after breakfast, we traveled to the Chiyouryuuji Kindergarten and Temple. We were given a Tyko Drum concert by the children, and a tour of the kindergarten and temple. There were no dry eyes as we departed the kindergarten in the "Hato-bus."  That afternoon we visited an agricultural co-op and the Shobu City Library.  Each delegate presented a book brought from Roseburg. In the evening we had a welcome reception dinner and gift exchange between the Sister Cities. The next day we went by bus to Nagatoro and took boats down the rapids. We also got to visit a sake winery and make Japanese paper at Higashichichibu Village.

Monday, our out-of-town three-day tour to the Mt. Fuji area commenced. Accompanied by our Japanese friends, our first day we visited the huge Kamakura Buddha statue and Odawara castle. Then we spent a relaxing night
in a spa hotel, where we enjoyed the spa, a large dinner, and karaoke. The next day we went to Lake Ashino-ko in the Hakone area, where we rode an aerial tram and a tour boat and visited an art museum. We again stayed in a spa hotel where we took in the spa, a multi course meal, and karaoke.

Although we had a very busy schedule, we got to know our wonderful, generous host families, and we look forward to seeing them again, either in Shobu or in Roseburg. I urge all of you to experience the trip or to be a host family here in Roseburg, to get to know these wonderful people.

RSC Community Outreach Activity Brainstorming
“Please Help ~ We Need Some Ideas!”

As you all know, we cancelled the Obon festival last year because of the huge amount of volunteer labor it took to make a festival like that a reality. For this year we are looking for some good ideas to have a smaller event that will remind the community of our presence, and of our goal to foster friendship and understanding through a cultural exchange program.

Some ideas for such an event are "Japanese Film Showing" or a "Sushi Night". If you have some great ideas, or if you would like to volunteer your skills and time for such an event, please let us know by sending an email to:

 info@roseburg-sister-cities.org
or drop us a note through the post mail.

Friendship Garden Notes: Japanese/Oregon Garden

“Looking Ahead to June!”

This garden, which is behind the Douglas County Library,    is a combination of Japanese and Oregon plants, and garden styles. I find it very enjoyable and relaxing to visit it. We try to keep it nice through several "Garden Parties" during the year.

We had a nice Garden Party of our Sister City members in November. This party included about fifteen members and their families, as well as a transient fellow who apparently likes gardens, as he not only talked with us while we worked, but also helped pick up debris.

We are planning to have the Job Corps help us in February and the Jr. High kids help us in April. We will be planning a Garden Party for Sister City members again in June, before the delegates come from Shobu. Please plan to help us probably the first or second Saturday in June.

The 2006 First Citizen’s Banquet held at the Douglas County Fairgrounds in January was a wonderful evening. The Roseburg Sister Cities table looked wonderful, as well as the members who attended!
